The real winners are...

I wonder whose bright idea it was to cancel House after it's 8th successful season. It's so like Hollywood innit... the minute they have something good that's worth watching, they go ahead and get rid of it so that they can torture us with never-ending pointless soapies and reality shows about people we don't care for and their dogs.
What really stands out about the character (for me) is that I can't ever imagine anyone else playing Gregory House other than Hugh Laurie. In fact, sometimes its difficult to distinguish that they aren't the same person. It was indeed a sad day to hear that House was axed. And then I thought of all the memorable lines. There are hundreds of witty one-liners, I've narrowed it down to my top 5:

5. "There is not a thin line between love and hate. There is - in fact - a Great Wall of China with armed sentries posted every 20 feet between love and hate."

4. "It's one of the great tragedies of life — something always changes."

3. "Disappointment is anger for wimps."

2. "You talk to God, you're religious; God talks to you, you're psychotic."

1. "It's a basic truth of the human condition that everybody lies. The only variable is about what."

The neurotic, sarcastic anti-hero has become a winning formula for successful TV shows. I guess it's because people can either relate to the characters or they wish they were more like them. My all time favourite anti-hero was Karen Walker but she's got some stiff competition from Sue Sylvester, the resident torturer slash teacher on Glee.
Sue Sylvester is the only reason I watch Glee. In terms of nastiness, it's difficult to establish who'd win between Gregory House and Sue Sylvester. Although, I somehow think that Sue is just downright mean (but oh so funny). My top 5 favourite lines:

5. [To Emma] "You know, the way you use your mental illness to help these kids is really inspiring. I'm shocked you're not married."

4. "I, for one, think intimacy has no place in a marriage. Walked in on my parents once, and it was like seeing two walruses wrestling."

3. "I suggest you pre-actively check into rehab, as you are a future alcoholic."

2. "I'm reasonably confident that you will be adding revenge to the long list of things you're no good at, right next to being married, running a high school glee club, and finding a hair style that doesn't make you look like a lesbian."

1. [To Will] "I don't trust a man with curly hair. I can't help picturing small birds laying sulfurous eggs in there, and I find it disgusting."

There are so many lines that I can't even pick just five. I wonder who sits around thinking up this stuff.

  2. I love House! Love him. Always liked Hugh from way back but this is definitely the character that made him. I'm not watching the final series yet as I don't want it to end.

Some great one liners there :)

  3. I used to love watching House when it first started... then they got rid of the original bunch of docs in the team, and I couldn't like it anymore. :(

  4. ...not to mention their cats. Hugh is great and so is his American accent as a matter of fact. He almost got me fooled. I don't know why great shows get canceled, but you can take it to the bank they're gonna do it after season eight. It's almost a given. I don't know about blogs, though... eight years? It's true. Something always changes. He's got a point there: the moment you tell people God has been talking to you, you're dubbed a nutcase. I've never understood that.

  5. I've been slavishly addicted to House since the very first season. I was disappointed when Seela Ward left the show simply because I think that she's just about as hot as they come. (but I digress)

Hugh Laurie is also a very good jazz musician.

But this is my favorite quote from House: "Our bodies break down, sometimes when we're 90, sometimes before we're even born, but it always happens and there's never any dignity in it. I don't care if you can walk, see, wipe your own ass. It's always ugly. Always. You can live with dignity, we can't die with it."

  6. I love Sue Sylvester in Glee...

and I love House!! I had no idea the show had been cancelled. I'm so out of the loop. I love the "disappointment is anger for wimps" quote.

By the by, I've just tagged you in a recent post if you'd like to take part. :)

  7. Hiya Azra (surprise!)

Isn't that what you do, cancel a good thing? Frankly, as fickle as audiences go, you have to wonder how shows like MASH and Cheers could run for more than a decade. Really, the only reason they stopped was because the actors wanted to move on. They could have written more. But today, it seems like audiences move on. Why dont shows last like that anymore?

Dont know if you get them in SA (thank the gods if you dont) but we can always look forward to those stellar "reality" shows like "Dangerous Catch", "Garage Wars," and "Pawn Shops" and whatever else. I think I'd rather watch nothing but "Gilligan's Island" before I watch anymore of that pablum for the masses.

    What me bitter? Nah.

  8. I so am going to miss House... Just an awesome show, and great writing. There's so much on TV that just doesn't have good writing or great actors portraying great characters. There is so much reality TV that're just so crappy, great TV shows like House are such a refreshing contrast.
I haven't watched much Glee, I need to watch more regularly

There are a lot of lines indeed!

    Jaya
Sue is the only reason I watch, everyone else irritates me to some degree.

    Juliette
I love House too. And I too don't want the series to end so I'm taking my time.

    Terra Shield
I was also disappointed when the original cast were relegated to series regulars. And it did take some time to get used to the new characters, but I don't regret it!

Hugh is my middle aged addiction lol! Like I said, I really think the character made him and vice versa. Hollywood just likes screwing with us, that's why all the good shows end.

That's an excellent line indeed... we sure as hell can't die with dignity. Sela Ward is beautiful, I used to love watching her in Once and Again too. And Hugh's going on tour with his band after this!

I will definitely take you up on that tag soon! I know what it feels like to be out of the loop...

I'm with you on loathing reality TV. The closest I ever got to watching (and enjoying) reality TV was a couple of episodes of "The Osbournes" and the original, season 1 of "Survivor" (and Survivor 5: Marquesas was good too). And the Amazing Race - only because it's more like a game show.

Hiya and welcome. I'm sure there are many people like you and me that will really miss House. And it's such a pity they can't continue making more shows like those, instead of bogging us down with other reality crap.

  10. I like it when House says to his friend ' I have gradually been increasing the amounts of money i borrow off you to test how you value our freindship' lol.
Must be draining having a house for a friend.

I agree! I love the character and he is hilarious, but I can't imagine how draining it must be! He's a high-maintenance friend...
