Sophrosyne

Yes, I know, I'm so late that I'm in time for the Chinese New Year. Ten days in and Happy New Year!, dear reader.

I've been away for a while, travelling, getting my head in the clouds and coming back down to earth again. The weirdest thing coming back home for me this time around, is that I can feel a subtle yet marked change in my reality. I can't explain it, but it feels strange - almost foreign. Something's changed. I've changed.

For one, I have a greater sense of how temporary and fleeting life is. And this makes me want to shed all my fears and just charge into the wind. There have also been a few eye openers over the last few weeks, and a chance to reflect and get some perspective, which is always great.

And what are our hopes and dreams for this year? For me, personally, none. I'm at a point in my life where I don't want to keep on making the same empty promises to myself. I don't want to set myself up for disappointment after disappointment, a life of wishful thinking, devoid of any action or real meaning.

Speaking of action, sometimes, if we want things to change, we have to MAKE certain changes. We can't go about our lives doing the same thing, expecting different results. I see this year as a year of just that - ACTION.

And when we have expectations, we ultimately set ourselves up for failure...cheating ourselves out of the lives we deserve to live because we're too afraid or lazy to live up to those expectations. In a sense, it's the ultimate betrayal - the betrayal of the self.

So I've made a conscious decision not to have any expectations this year. I don't expect this year to be drastically different from any other year - and my only resolution is to take each day as it comes. What "taking each day as it comes" means to me is basking in every present moment; making conscious choices to optimize my physical, mental and emotional well-being, making the most of my time; cutting out all negativity; and finding a balance... essentially, the gist behind the word Sophrosyne:
Wishing everyone everywhere a healthy, safe, blessed, and prosperous year ahead! Let's make it count :)

  5. I hear you. I have a few things I want to do/learn this year, but these are not really resolutions. otherwise, I just want to say yes more often and to live with more intent. there is a subtle sense of urgency. life is fleeting. so what are we waiting for?

    happy Chinese New Year xoxo

    1. Saying yes more often and living with more intent sounds fantastic Petra - I think it just adds to the gist of it. Let's GO!

  6. I definitely understand what you mean about expectations - I think I place too many expectations on others and need to get out of that habit. That never ends up going well for either party involved

    1. It's something most people do Rooth - because we live in a world where the culture of expectation has become the norm. Here's to Living and Let Living! :)

  7. Glad to hear Azra. I'm in the same boat. I'm in a huge transition uncertain of what comes next but I have to take action steps to get to the next level... whatever that is.
Wishing you all the best as you figure out what it is you want and need for yourself! You can do it!
